Artist’s Journal: NUMBER 43
Jerry: Well, uh, maybe something happens on the way to work.
George: No, no, no. Nothing happens.
Jerry: Well, something happens.
Russell: Well, why am I watching it?
George: Because it’s on TV.
The Pitch – Season 4, Episode 3 – Seinfeld (TV Series 1990 – 98)
Another thing that popped out at my last opening while trying to explain what I do was Seinfeld and the now famous, or infamous, The Pitch episode. I’m not trying to say anything.
I’m not trying to duplicate anything. It’s really all about nothing.
Well, why am I doing it?
Because it’s Art!
My favorite art historian E. H. Gombrich (1909 – 2001) said, “There really is no such thing as Art. There are only artists.” Hum, Art is “made”then by others. Those, it seems, who decide what is and what is not Art.
He also said, “All artistic discoveries are discoveries not of likenesses but of equivalencies which enable us to see reality in terms of an image and an image in terms of reality.”
What equals nothing?
What is real?
